About
Established in 2024, the Figure 8 Race Team is a student organization designed to introduce engineering and technical skills through applied, project‑based learning. The team places a strong emphasis on early student involvement, supporting the development of foundational competencies such as computer-aided design (CAD), fabrication, and mechanical systems.
Through a structured progression of training and application, students contribute to the design, construction, and refinement of race vehicles while working collaboratively across disciplines.
Subteams
Design Team
The design team is responsible for vehicle development, including the creation of new designs and iterative improvements to existing systems. Team members gain experience in CAD, analysis, and engineering problem‑solving, with leadership roles typically held by upper‑level students.
Mechanics Team
The mechanics teams focus on drivetrain, suspension, and engine systems. Members participate in maintenance, assembly, and rebuilding processes while developing an understanding of core mechanical principles.
Manufacturing Team
The manufacturing team oversees fabrication and production, including the construction of structural components and custom parts. Students gain exposure to tools and processes such as welding, CNC machining, and laser cutting.
Business Team
The business team supports organizational operations, including communications, recruitment, sponsorship development, budgeting, and outreach. This team provides opportunities for students from a range of academic backgrounds to contribute.
Get Involved
Participation in the team offers opportunities to apply academic concepts in a practical setting while developing both technical and professional skills. Students benefit from:
- Hands‑on experience in engineering design, fabrication, and mechanical systems
- Early and sustained involvement for undergraduate students
- Exposure to industry‑relevant tools and processes
- Collaboration within a structured, team‑based environment
- Opportunities for leadership, communication, and project management development
The organization supports students in building a foundation for future academic, professional, and industry pursuits.
